i2r Engineering Apprentice, Abigail Jones has been awarded the Victor Ludorum Trophy - the highest accolade, in Telford College's awards ceremony that took place this week.
Abi was described as a ‘trailblazer for young women in engineering’. Tutors said: “During national Women In Engineering Week, Abi took part in an interview focusing on women who are new to engineering and explained how, at first, she felt intimidated working in a male-dominated environment. “She has overcome this by building positive relationships, and continues to offer advice and guidance to any women wanting to start an engineering and manufacturing career.”
Abi joined i2r, who manufacture aluminium containers, 4 years ago on the company’s apprenticeship scheme. Working as an engineer in various areas of the business, Abi has developed skills and experience working full time in production, tooling and maintenance sides of the business, whilst studying an NVQ Level 3, part time at Telford College.
Jo Beck, General Manager for i2r commented, ‘Throughout her time with the business Abi has shown hard work and dedication. We are incredibly proud of Abi, she is a fantastic example of how apprenticeships can benefit both the company and the individual. We are delighted that Abi’s work ethic and determination has been recognised with this award, she has a bright future ahead.’
Abi, who completed her NVQ Level 3 last week, also received a highly commended award for Apprentice of the Year in the Telford college awards. During her apprenticeship she has also been shortlisted for both the FPA Rising Star award 2024 and the Lloyds Banking Group SME Apprentice of the Year 2023.
